The Leiden Collection

New York’s Leiden Collection, which is the world’s largest private collection of Rembrandts and Rembandt School pieces has entrusted VideoArt with telling its story in galleries and online. Its touring exhibition, “Masterpieces of The Leiden Collection,” recently opened at the Louvre in Paris. This month, the exhibition travels to Beijing (and then Shanghai) and will include an introductory film by VideoArt.

Beginning in 2013, Martin Huberman interviewed the founder of the Collection, Thomas Kaplan, and renowned curators of Dutch art from museums like The Getty, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and London’s Royal Academy. For one special scene, we were waiting in the conservation lab as a one of the curators walked in a got his first ever look at a newly discovered and cleaned Rembrandt. In another film, we take viewers behind the scenes at the National Gallery of Art as curator Arthur Wheelock discusses the details of the painting and his deep personal affection for it.
